Creative East Awards 2008 - Poppyland Publishing wins “Best Factual Publication"

The Commercial Life of a Suffolk Town by well known local author and member of the Suffolk Local History Council, John Bridges, has won an award for its publisher, Poppyland Publishing. At the prestigious Creative East ceremony hosted by Clive Anderson at the Theatre Royal, Norwich on 20th March, Poppyland Publishing won the "Best Factual Publication" award.

The award was presented by John Fry, Chief Executive of Archant Group Ltd. and was sponsored by BBC East. The judges were looking for an accurate, well presented, clear and easy to read book that was visually appealing. With double the number of entries for the Creative East awards this year, totalling nearly 300, there was much competition in the various classes, which included web design, television programmes, graphic and design and feature films. The citation read out by John Fry praised the quality of the research that had gone into the book “The Commercial Life of a Suffolk Town – Framlingham around 1900”, the Poppyland Publishing entry.  He also praised the quality and clarity of the layout and the context in which it was presented.
Author John Bridges grew up in the town and goes beyond simply recalling the town at the beginning of the 20th century to examine, through period accounts of all the principal businesses, how a typical regional town conducted its business. With many contemporary photographs both from the town and from neighbouring communities, he creates a flavour of life before the First World War and has created a first class resource for those interested in East Anglian history.
“The Commercial Life of a Suffolk Town” which, whilst focused on Framlingham around the year 1900, illustrates the way of life in most of the towns in the region at that time. It is available from Poppyland Publishing (www.poppyland.co.uk) and from bookshops and museums in East Anglia. (ISBN 978 0 946148 80 6; illustrated, 191pp £14.95)
